Young Swedish Design 2024

Salon, pavilion, fair or hall – for an exhibition that travels to all corners of the country, flexibility is needed in the framework. For Young Swedish Design 2024, a completely new exhibition format was created in collaboration with the designer Matti Klenell and the producer Dunkers Kulturhus.

“The entries to Young Swedish Design always touch me, with their honest endeavor they convey a unique sense of clarity and at the same time optimism. Thanks to our new collaboration, we have been able to design the entire exhibition in the same passionate spirit,” says Karin Wiberg, project manager for Ung Svensk Form.

ANNUAL REPORT
For such a diverse group of designers, the ability to develop an exhibition format that can be adapted to different spaces and objects is required. Matti Klenell’s exhibition concept Årsringar presents a set of splash-painted wooden cubes in different sizes. During transportation, the cubes are packed into each other in a resource-saving manner; in the exhibition hall, they are assembled in podium islands of varying sizes.

The exhibition format is based on reuse and highlighting the passage of time. In collaboration with Svenskt Trä as a material advisor, potential beauty spots are not seen as flaws but as communicative power. In symbiosis with the random twigs and knots in the wood, future editions of the exhibition will feature an accent color in the form of splatter painting.

“For me, the fantastic Young Swedish Design is primarily a social event. A way to meet an audience as a participant, but also colleagues to network and collaborate with in the future. Even for me in my role as exhibition designer, the social aspect was crucial in taking on the fun challenge of designing this year’s edition,” says designer Matti Klenell.

FROM GREENHOUSE TO GALLERIES
After the opening in Greenhouse, the exhibition will continue on a year-long tour to Dunkers Kulturhus, Southern Sweden Design Days by Form/Design Center, Sara Kulturhus, IKEA Museum and Röhsska Museum.

The exhibition Young Swedish Design 2024 is a co-production between Svensk Form and Dunkers kulturhus. The project is carried out in collaboration with IKEA of Sweden, IKEA Museum, Malmö City, Stockholm Furniture Fair, Svenskt Trä, and a wide range of scholarship providers and exhibition organizers.
